The Surprising Truth Why Negative Self-Image Just Ain’t True

As my journey reading the life-changing book – ‘The Art Of Happiness‘ – draws to a serene and soul-enriching close, here is another bountiful Buddhist insight on a modern neurosis that’s affected us all at one time or another – negative self-image.

Shaped by our parents and upbringing, the implicit messages that we pick up about ourselves as we grow and develop can easily topple into negative self-talk that we carry with us through-out our lives.

Where Does Negative Self-Talk Come From?

Self-hatred can creep into our lives and be exacerbated when our behaviour fails to live up to our idealised self-image – a self-image culturally reinforced by environmental factors like Facebook and Twitter which can feel as stiflingly present as the air that we breathe.

Why This Negativity Ain’t Real…

But here’s the good news! The notion that self-hatred is a widespread human problem is challenged by the reality that it is virtually unheard of within cultures such as the Tibetan culture.

This strongly reminds us that this troubling mental state, like all other negative mental states, is not an intrinsic part of the human mind.

It is not something we are born with, irrevocably saddled with, nor is it an indelible characteristic of our nature.

It can be removed.

This realisation alone can serve to weaken its power, give us hope and increase our commitment to eliminate it.

How Real Are The Burdens You Carry Around?

And that’s one of the great beauties of this wonderful book – so rich in spiritual learnings. Based on a western psychiatrist’s interviews with the Dalai Lama, it unites learnings from the East and the West to powerful effect – challenging all sorts of burdensome assumptions we carry with us in the spaceless vortex of city life.

How Can You Apply This In Your Daily Life?

So next time you feel weighed down by the noise of life – like the walls of social media are caving in on you – like you can’t recall what’s special about you – or life – pick up a book like this one and treat yourself to some deep-healing, Eastern meditation that will replenish your mind and soothe your soul.

The Surprising Truth About Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves “who am I to be brilliant, talented and fabulous?”

Actually, who are you not to be?

There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people don’t feel insecure around you. We are meant to shine. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And, as we let our lights shine we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others”

Marianne Williamson

Do you ever dumb yourself down? When does it happen and what is the cause? Is it around a particular type of person and what part do past experiences play in this?

Let’s make a pact. This week we are ourselves. Loud, proud and set on fire. No matter how big your personality, no matter what others may think, step into your power and own it. You will always inspire the right people. And you know what? The rest don’t matter ;)

#Cicero: Why Gratitude Is The Greatest Of All Virtues

“I just went to the International Children’s Film Festival, and it was all sold out, but one lady had an extra ticket and just gave it to me! Can you believe that? That’s a $13 ticket! It was a Japanese anime film, everything was hand painted. It was just the best. Look at those sunflowers in that window. Aren’t they gorgeous? Photograph me next to them!”

Can You Tell Me A Bit About What You Do?

In 3 words ….. I’m an Entrepreneur, Yoga teacher & Founder of Loveyogabum.

What Was Your Previous Experience Before Starting Your Business?

Chaos inside and out!! But this chaos led me to where I am today. My road to self acceptance has been bumpy and it’s a constant work in progress! I find affirmations and yoga have helped me hugely. The best time for affirmations for me is when I first wake up.

What Inspired You To Start Your Business?

A sense that my life was in my hands and I was in charge of making it what I will.

How Did You Manage To Build Your Business?

Through hard work, time, persistence and a belief in what I was doing. Oh and many mistakes!! But I learned that these mistakes really helped me stay emotionally strong when I might have been tempted to throw the towel in!

What’s Been The Biggest Highlight?

I think seeing transformation occur on our retreats for me is the biggest joy.  We have had people who perhaps didn’t even realise they needed a shift but have allowed themselves to be open and in doing so things have come up for them which is wonderful to see.

How Do You Build Your Client Base?

Good old word of mouth and reputation. Social media is also a powerful tool.

What Advice Would You Give To Budding Entrepreneurs?

Get stuck into doing something you love. Have confidence in yourself and your ability to dream big and make things happen. You will make mistakes but learn to love the journey as a windy road is far more interesting than a straight one!

What’s Next For You?

I’m off to the Turkish Coast for our next yoga retreat at my Garden of Eden, Suleyman’s Garden, with one of our amazing yoga teachers, Sarah Kekus. We’ll be practicing yoga whilst the sun sets over the ocean, unwinding in hammocks and eating healthy feasts to die for! I can’t wait!

3 Top Tips On How To Get Up Early

The Day Started Badly…

This morning was painful.

Mustering the motivation to move from my cosy bed to the snowy cold outside was not appealing. It was appalling.

And then I came across this two minute video by Jeff Goins - “3 Top Tips On How To Get Up Early“. It must’ve been the law of attraction working its way to my sleepy consciousness…

Why Tune In?

They say almost all successful people get going before sunrise and no doubt, like me, you want to be, or remain, amongst this delicious elite.

The advantages of rising early are endless, with Forbes magazine listing “The Top Ten Advantages Of Waking Up Early” here and Personal Development Guru, Robin Sharma stressing the benefits of waking up early as one of the critical success factors that most great people in the world practice daily. Check out his best-selling novel, “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” here, which propounds this advice and more. Thought-provoking stuff.

Pleasure Versus Pain…

Why then, given the numerous benefits, is it so hard to wrench myself from the cosiness of my bed when my morning alarm goes off?

If this is something you also struggle with, fear not, help is at hand with Goin’s user-friendly video guide. Nothing flashy, nothing whacky, just 3 practical tips on how to conquer the most challenging part of the day. The $70 dollar slipper tip is ingenious!
