Prepare to be shocked and impressed. Basil Baker is in town!
Basil (otherwise known as Chloe) is a wonderful Aussie friend who recently told me about how her life has dramatically changed by getting up at 5:30am.
“Wow!” I thought. What’s your secret?
We all hear about the benefits of these types of rituals, but how do you implement something that feels so counter-intuitive when every part of you wants to stay in bed?! What are the drawbacks? Is it worth the pain? And most of all, how do we apply this in our own lives, transforming a ‘should’ into a ‘want’?
Read on and all will be revealed. Over to you, Basil!
Tell Us A Bit About You…
I was so tired! I was tired of my morning ‘routine’ being a scrounge around for something that was easy to iron, shotting my coffee instead of a refreshing and slow cup of tea and tired of being annoyed at myself for not allowing myself more time.
The less I did each night as the warmer weather and daylight savings ended, the less I wanted to do and I felt my work and relationship suffering. This was all because I was unorganised and felt time poor.
So I decided to change things – dramatically.
I started rising at 5:30am – an hour earlier than normal – to enjoy a quiet and still house before heading out to work with students all day.
What Were The Benefits?
That time meant that my routine was no longer a stressful run around – instead, I left for work with a sense of calm.
As a result I had more energy – something that really surprised me. I was sleeping less yet felt more alert?!
The feeling quickly became addictive and I decided to use the energy in a way I haven’t for a while – by exercising! I re-joined my local gym and now attend the spin and pump classes every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Did You Hold On To Your Old Life In Any Way?
My partner suggested that I have a lie in midweek and even that now is a struggle to do. It is amazing how quickly your body clock adjusts.
How Is It Possible To Stick To This?
I organise the next day, go to bed earlier, sleep better and wake up feeling great.
Why Should We Try This?
Exercising in the morning has given me more energy and has stopped me from craving junk food around 11am – I wasn’t even lasting until 3pm without some sugary, butter treat.
It’s also amazing how less sleep and more movement has restored the sense of control I was lacking in my life.
Getting up at 5:30am has made me feel so much better! I was constantly reading about the benefits in all the blogs I follow – turns out they were right!
