Why CEOs Say Coaching Is Far More Than Hot Air

12705335_843558282421110_3613435393192619964_n

“I never cease to  be amazed by the power of the coaching process”.

John Russell, Managing Director, Harley Davidson Europe

If, like me, your first impression of coaching was some wacky American self-help thang full of hot air, you wouldn’t be the first.

And I’ll bet my bottom dollar you won’t be the last to eat your words when you realise that:

“People, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities” Bob Nardelli, CEO, Home Depot

And by people, I’m talking clients from all walks of life – Cambridge graduates, company directors, school leavers and cynics. Like my highly successful friend who was dismayed he couldn’t become a Partner at his FTSE 500 company without a coaching session. After an hour with the coach, he soon changed his mind.

1934563_843558472421091_5360022413944415221_n

If, like him a year back, you’re wondering what coaching is all about or how it could serve you with results based goods, check out some kind words below which walk you through the process ☄

“Melanie was incredibly helpful; she was insightful, she was understanding, and helped me to think of ways round issues and problems I had, or perceived I had!

She invited me to examine how the various areas of my life informed each other, and this was very revealing. I consider myself an insightful person, but she helped me to look at things truly; often it takes someone else to really reflect things to us.

She came from a very practical, yet empathetic stance, and was constantly encouraging. I felt that I could really take those small steps towards achieving what I wanted to achieve, and that it wasn’t as daunting as I had thought.

I think I had a tendency to over complicate things, and also to expect too much of myself. She helped me to break it down into small achievable goals, many of which I have now achieved.

Her knowledge, natural intelligence, warmth and wisdom gave me confidence that she believed in me, and therefore I should believe in myself a bit more!” –

The 10 Minute Magic Trick Back To Happiness

11053896_830927630350842_9129528704886949864_o

What’s the sign that you’re truly ‪#‎happy‬?

What’s that feeling you get that tells you that all is exactly as it should be?

How do you know that something or someone is right for you?

For me, it was a bit of a surprise to discover it was a feeling of PEACE.

Times I’ve Felt Peaceful Include:

♧ When I left London for Madrid and then the mountains;
♧ When I left law for life coaching;
♧ When I write.

What Causes Calm?

Quotefancy-1407-3840x2160

Living life in accordance with your values - those things which make you tick – your internal drivers – your silent anchors which, when honoured and engaged, make you feel alive and at peace.

What Causes Niggling Unease?

1073777109658021813b30fbd101acff

If you’re feeling out of sorts at the moment – like you’re not quite where you’re meant to be – not doing a job you enjoy – not spending time with the right people – or not living in the right place – that’s likely because you’re not living your life in accordance with your values.

Maybe that’s because you feel too busy to take time out, too overwhelmed to think straight or maybe you’ve simply never sat down and worked out what really makes you tick.

The great news is, that feeling of unease is easy to resolve if you take a step back and spend ten minutes working out your values.

How To Recapture Your Va-Va-Voom

Disney-Quote-400x400

Tap into the real you by formulating a list of your 8-10 core drivers – the things which give you purpose – by asking yourself:

♧ What am I doing when I’m happiest?
♧ What couldn’t I do without in my life?
♧ What would my ideal day involve?
♧ If I had all the money in the world, what would I be doing?
♧ If time was no object, where would you find me?

Your list may include words like:

‪#‎freedom‬ ‪#‎friends‬ ‪#‎love‬ ‪#‎writing‬ ‪#‎nature‬ ‪#‎travel‬ ‪#‎money‬ and more.

It’s totally personal.

Now put those words in order of priority.

Once you’ve done that you should be able to spot the cause of your unease.

Which one of those values isn’t being met at the moment? If it’s a value near the top of your list, chances are you’re feeling all kinds of funny.

Don’t Believe Me?

happiness-is-that-state-of-consciousness-which-proceeds-from-the-achievement-of-ones-values-quote-1

You can test your values by looking back at times in your life when you felt unlike yourself – whether an ill-fitting relationship or an unfulfilling job. Review your values list against each scenario and I’ll bet you can identify which need wasn’t being met and why you felt so strange. Bear in mind, though, that your values evolve over time so what may have mattered to you ten years ago may hold less significance now.

The Magic Bullet

decisions

Having identified your needs, ask yourself what can you do to realign your ‪#‎life‬ with your ‪#‎values‬.

Savour how much more confident you feel making a ‪#‎change‬ now you understand why you feel the way you do.

Marie Forleo: How You Can Make Fear Your Secret Weapon For Success

12512463_830632043713734_178200621039760129_n

\\ POWERFUL TRANSFORMATIVE TEACHING ON FEAR from the awe inspiring ‪#‎entrepreneur‬,‪ #‎author‬ and ‪#‎philanthropist‬ Marie Forleo

We’re all riddled with fear to different degrees – at different points on our ‪#‎journeys‬.

Whether:

۩ fear of being alone;
۩
fear of failure;
۩
fear of disappointment

or otherwise – I know I’ve felt all three at times, as have most of my phenomenal female friends.

But as the lioness, Marie, so eloquently reminds us, we must reframe our fear and activate it as the positive force that it really is.

How Can Fear Be Positive?

tumblr_no46pfQrpu1tfjxdjo1_1280

If you think about it, fear is just a manifestation of uncertainty – the risk of not achieving something that is hugely important to us. And where does that leave our identity?! Nowhere certain. Nowhere concrete. Nowhere fun.

But here’s the thing – fear is also a pretty draining emotion – if not embraced for what it really symbolises – which leaves us stuck worrying about the past or the future rather than harnessing the fun, fruity and pretty darn hopeful – present.

How Can We Convert Fear Into A Force For Good?

overcoming-fear-quotes-1

So embrace your fear today by asking yourself what the positive intention behind your fear really is. Maybe it’s soaring ambition, a gorgeous readiness to love or the inner perfectionist that lights your path?

Now refocus your mind on that – magnify it – tenfold – and watch your fear melt into rock – hard – pumping – power ☼

Tragic To Magic: How Reframing Negative Self-Talk Could Change Your Life

11885310_893107997439756_2987290939043943933_n

reframing+rest

Happy Friday, wee ones!

I had a cracking coaching session yesterday with a lovely Canadian client who found one technique, in particular, really transformative.

This will be helpful to any Gazers who want to reframe a negative emotion into a positive one. In Keara’s case this was reframing her anxiety, quietening over-thinking and that self-critical inner voice to something more productive, invigorating and self-loving.

How Does Reframing Work?

reframe-failure

Let’s say you put yourself down as over-sensitive. How could you reframe that into a more positive statement? How about reframing yourself as a compassionate soul who is highly perceptive, noticing things that go over others’ heads? I’m guessing you can think of at least 2 occasions in your life when this has been massively helpful, whether in relationships, work or other areas.

Or maybe you think you’re too analytical, finding yourself entrenched in thoughts 24/7 and far from the zen you truly crave. How could you reframe that into something more liberating? How about trying to think of yourself as a pro-risk assessor, gifted at weighing up the pros and cons of life’s complexities? I’ll bet this has brought real value to your life in vital areas, whether attention to detail at work or the ability to see situations from different perspectives.

So for any Gazers bogged down in negative self-talk, try this today – write it on a note in your phone and look at it every time your negative inner voice becomes too loud. It really does work.

Want To Know More Where That Came From?

change-the-world

And for any Gazers out there wanting to know more about the transformative effects of coaching, here’s what my lovely client in question kindly shared:

“I am so glad that I had the opportunity to have a coaching session with Melanie. I couldn’t believe how much I got out of our one session! I had many ‘a-ha’ moments and Melanie really helped me to pin down what I wanted to work on and enabled me to see how I could shift my perspective on challenges I was facing. I left the session with clarity and inspiration and actionable steps that I could take to help me achieve my goals. I would highly recommend Melanie as a coach!”

The 3 Core Needs: The Secret To Happiness

10346588_10152085584100916_2344392298587942562_n

what-the-world-needs-quote

If you’re feeling panicked / unsure / worried about anything at the moment, wee Gazer, guaranteed you can trace it to a lack of one of the three core human needs.

1. SIGNIFICANCE

1468_1-quotes-nelson-mandela-nelsonmandela

What makes you feel important? Whether your job, a relationship, creating or adventuring, a lack of significance can eat away at your day to day confidence levels and leave you feeling like something’s awry…

I know if I don’t have a sense of growth in my professional world or if I don’t communicate regularly with best friends, I start to feel less significant.

So if you’re feeling a bit below par in the significance stakes, think about who you spend time with who lights up your life or what activities boost your morale and make them a priority – pronto! Your sense of self matters.

2. LOVE

104191-o

Whether giving or receiving love from friends, family, a partner or a pet, studies show that love is central to our sense of centredness.

For me, giving love and receiving love always brings me back to my core, increasing happiness levels and my sense of balance. Failing that, spend time with some puppies. I did so this week and can testify to the happy hormones it releases – better than any man can provide in my humble opinion ;)

If you don’t have an immediate love source, try focusing on giving out more love and watch it boomerang back to you twofold. Watch, wait and receive.

3. CERTAINTY

5efffae97912c41426775dead5705797

This is a big one – especially for the control freaks amongst us. If you’re unsure about something key in your life whether your job, a relationship or a big change coming up, it’s only natural you may be feeling slightly off-centre somewhere deep down inside.

I know if I’m uncertain about something central in my life like where I’m going to live next (which for me means meeting the needs of my adventure nut boyfriend as well as my need for the finer things in life), I wake up every day with a knot in my stomach.

If you’re feeling a bit unsure about life, identify what’s making you feel uncertain and brainstorm some measures to move you closer to certainty. You’ll be surprised how taking baby steps towards feeling more in control can help you feel a whole heap better.

WHY BOTHER, WEE ONE?

being-entirely-honest

Recognising the root of feeling ‘off’ (as my big-hearted American pal puts it), goes a long way in helping you feel yourself again. Once you have a plan in place for getting back to yourself, you’re half way there. Or in the words of the coolest chick I discovered this week, “SO WHAT; NOW WHAT?”

The Secret To Reaching Your Goals

“A goal without a wish is just a plan”

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

What are your goals this week? How will you know when you’ve achieved them and how will they change your life? What might get in the way and how will you feel when you’ve attained them?

How Do You Reach Your Goals?

best-quotes-for-goal-setting

No matter how big or small your goals might be, their value is determined by YOU! Set achievable goals which make you feel good and anticipate obstacles so nothing gets in the way. Write them down and visualise how good you’ll feel after traversing from A to B. Then plan a treat to celebrate attaining them :)

A Week Of Firsts

Candles- number 1 green-500x500

The last few days have been a week of firsts for me, seeing me achieve goals which may be run of the mill for others but mean something to me. They are, in no particular order:

1) Cooking: my first roast chicken with homemade stuffing and bread sauce (minus the usual culinary disaster). It was lovely to pleasantly surprise my gifted culinary chum, Maudie and my increasingly cynical boyfriend;

2) Driving: said cynic’s big white van without crashing it. Last time there were a couple of near misses, ending in tears in more ways than one; and

3) Skiing: the Vallée blanche without falling down a crevasse. My lack of progress skiing this season made me all the more determined to achieve something I’d be proud of. In the first picture I’d just asked Mowgli if the transceiver that he’d strapped to my torso was in case I fell down a crevasse. ‘No’, he replied. ‘Phew’, I thought. ‘It’s in case there’s an avalanche’. Comforting words.

How Do You Apply This In Your Daily Life?

Commit to your goals this week and don’t let anything or anyone get in the way.

Coaching Testimonials

globe_9_1024x1024

“I was constantly stressed and feeling overwhelmed in both my professional and personal life, unable to clear my mind and change my practices. Upon one session with Melanie, I was able to recognise my own strengths and identify patterns within my own behaviour that both help and hinder me.

Obstacles that I placed in front of myself have now been removed and my thought process has completely changed, giving me more clarity each day. Within weeks, I was performing better at work and am no longer ‘taking it home’ with me.  This has ultimately improved the way I am in my personal life. My mood has become lighter and I feel calmer. My relationships are better. In turn, I prioritise exercise and self-care again. These practices came back into my life and I feel better for it, like I have more control. I have learnt to tune in and trust my intuition and be more patient and accepting of myself.

Melanie will ask hard questions and it makes you look inwards. This is something that I have avoided for a long time.  We are so often blind to the good things that others can see. Not only does she offer you this insight which has improved my confidence, but she has the ability to make you feel less alone in your battles. Melanie gives practical advice too, if requested, which I didn’t expect. She has directed me to particular tools and has sent me articles that I may not have come across myself. This personable approach makes the coaching seem more like a lifestyle change than a consultation.

The help is not generic. Melanie listens to you and tailors her words carefully to best serve you in that moment. I had been ‘dabbling’ with the idea of a coach for a long time. Sometimes these things find you and sometimes they don’t. Seek opportunity…. Melanie has genuinely  shifted the way I think and feel about myself and the life I am living. The things I want are clearer and within reach now thanks to her guidance”.

“Meeting Mel was one of the greatest things that happened to me this year.

The idea of being life-coached was very exciting and slightly scary at the same time, but I decided to give it a go and have never regretted it even for a fraction of a second! The experience has been amazing, extremely valuable and very helpful!

Talking to Mel helped me realize quite a few things about myself and to look at certain things from a different perspective. I could make some important improvements, which made me a happier person and hugely helped me in my personal and professional life. I loved Mel’s way of guiding me through the thought process and leading me to realisations that I’d never come across before – just because we all tend to think in a certain way.

She was very professional and very sensitive with difficult subjects. It felt like talking to a very good friend.

I would highly recommend her if you are a looking for a professional life coach who will help you to live a happier and more fulfilled life”.

“I wasn’t sure about what life coaching was exactly but one session with Mel was enough to make me feel like there was a plan for me and we would reach it together. Time flew by and I couldn’t believe how efficient we were solving what I thought were insurmountable challenges. I felt appreciated and well looked after. Mel truly cared about my wellbeing and it was clear from the start that she had a plan as to how to get the best out of me. I felt so much at ease. Mel’s coaching could best be described as the union of understanding, care and competence”.

Personal Coaching: A Shortcut From A to B

11129773_10153199639064146_8518891243854426757_o-2

What Is Personal Coaching?

Coaching is different to counselling. It’s a goal-orientated process which helps you move from where you are now to where you want to be. Turning ideas into action, it’s a transformative process which empowers you to identify and implement your goals through a series of strategic questions. If we touch on your past, it’s as a springboard to further your future goal.

Does A Personal Coach Tell You What To Do?

life-coaching11

While I’m happy to give input as part of the session, if requested, my role as a coach is not to tell you what to do. I’m more of a sounding board, providing a structure through which you identify what you really want. And while this may sound counterintuitive, it makes a lot of sense because when you ask others for advice, they often tell you what you should do, failing to identify what you really want to do, whether a well-meaning parent, best friend, colleague or partner.

Why Is The Coaching Method Effective?

happiness-is-when-what-you-think-what-you-say-and-what-you-do-are-in-harmony-20

How can a coach who doesn’t know you, help you? Because even identical twins are incredibly different, with different instincts and drivers. When these are effectively and objectively extracted, you start moving beyond what you think you should be doing towards what makes you truly happy. This is when you start making powerful decisions which will open your life in ways you couldn’t imagine.

What Can I Help You With?

032020-Every_new_day_is_another_chance_to_change_your_life

I specialise in a variety of areas including:

  • Confidence coaching;
  • Relationship coaching; and
  • Career coaching.

Within these areas, I’ve helped clients to achieve goals ranging from choosing a new career and homeland, how to better manage stress, how to increase confidence, how to move on from relationship breakdown and divorce and how to get a new business off the ground. You can find some testimonials further down the page if you’d like a little more insight.

I also assist with values elicitation which involves identifying a shortlist of principles which drive you. These could range from family, meeting new people and learning to creativity, travel or financial security. It sounds simple but so many of us find ourselves feeling conflicted at certain points in our lives without really understanding why, whether in respect of careers, partnerships which don’t feel quite right or environments which make us feel uneasy.

Why bother with the values stuff, you might ask.

Once you’ve identified your values, you can see exactly why you’ve made the decisions you have in life, why some have been extremely fulfilling and others frustrating or upsetting. Not only does this bring peace of mind, clarifying past chapters in your life but once you have clarity on what makes you tick, you can make future decisions with real confidence, whether choosing a new career, making better romantic choices or deciding where to live. It really can be life-changing and is an incredible toolkit for life.

Where Did I Train?

Drawings-london17.5x12.5cm1-e1365021853290

I qualified as a Life Coach with The Coaching Academy, the world’s largest training organisation for coaches. Prior to that I worked as a family lawyer in London which I found incredibly rewarding but for the lack of work life balance.

I’m passionate about harnessing my own experiences – personal, professional and spiritual – to help you design your life in a way which brings you true happiness - your version of it, your way.

Because while we’re all beautifully unique, no matter how different we may seem, we all operate within a similar framework of happiness. We are frustrated when we live our lives at odds with our values and we are set free when we learn what makes us tick. Once we identify what makes us happy and reshape our lives in accordance with these values, life becomes a whole lot less stressful and a whole lot more fulfilling.

How Much Does My Coaching Cost?

acceptance-quotes-responsibility-quotues

There’s the good news! I offer single sessions as well as a range of discounted packages you can tailor to your needs.

What makes me different?

You’ll receive a complementary extra half an hour per session – that’s a juicy 30 minutes longer than the average hour long coaching session. This gives you a greater return on your investment and gives me even more satisfaction as your coach.

Please contact me through the email below if you’re committed to change. It’s my privilege to help you if you want to shake things up.
